State Veteran Cemeteries to Hold Holiday Wreath Laying Ceremonies

Every December, Georgia’s veteran memorial cemeteries in Milledgeville and Glennville participate in Wreaths Across America and lay live balsam fir wreaths at the headstones of Georgia’s fallen sons and daughters.

Both of Georgia’s Veterans Memorial Cemeteries will host a public program before the wreath laying begins to remember the service and sacrifices of Georgia’s veterans at 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 15.

"Taking a moment during the busy holiday season to honor the dignity and memory of those who served before us is important,” said GDVS Commissioner Mike Roby.

Volunteers are encouraged to attend the public ceremony and remain to help place wreaths on graves.

The program in Milledgeville, hosted by cemetery director Linda Lavender, will feature keynote remarks from Russell Feagin, the GDVS Director of Health and Memorials. Stacey Blanton, a local singer, will provide two songs for visitors.

Members of the Patriot Guard Riders will assist the cemetery in laying the first ceremonial wreath. A detachment from the Retired Marine Corps League will present military funeral honors for the Georgians lost over the last year.

In Glennville, the ceremony will be hosted by the President of the Bonaventure Society and Children of the American Revolution, Elizabeth Sills. They have hosted the ceremony at GVMC-Glennville since 2008.

Glennville Mayor Chris Roessler will lead the Pledge of Attendance and welcome the local community to this year’s remembrance ceremony. Effingham County High School’s Air Force JROTC cadets will present the colors and place the first ceremonial wreaths.

All living veterans in attendance at the ceremony in Glennville will be presented with thank you cards and Wreaths Across American lapel pins.

Both state cemeteries welcome and invite the public to assist in laying wreaths on all graves following the ceremonies.
